COMMON QUESTIONS

Why do OEM scan tools matter for diagnostics?
Generic OBD scanners only read basic engine and transmission codes. OEM factory tools — like BMW ISTA, Porsche PIWIS, Mercedes Star Diagnosis, and Audi ODIS — access every module in the vehicle: body control, airbag, steering, adaptive suspension, and dozens more. They read manufacturer-specific codes, access live data streams, and run guided diagnostic routines that generic tools simply can't. This is the difference between “P0300 misfire” and actually finding the root cause.
What's included in a full system diagnostic?
We scan every electronic module in your vehicle using OEM factory tools — not just engine and transmission, but ABS, airbag (SRS), body control, instrument cluster, steering, TPMS, and any other networked module. Every stored and pending fault code is read, interpreted, and documented. We analyze live data where needed and provide a written report with our findings, the likely root cause, and recommended next steps. No jargon, no upselling — just clear answers.
How long does a diagnostic scan take?
A standard full system scan typically takes 30–60 minutes depending on the vehicle. Complex electrical issues or intermittent faults may take longer as we trace wiring, check CAN bus communication, and run component-level tests. Either way, most diagnostics are completed same day. We'll give you a time estimate when you describe the issue.
What's the difference between an OBD scan and an OEM scan?
An OBD-II scan reads standardized generic codes from the engine and transmission — the same thing AutoZone or O'Reilly does for free. An OEM scan uses the manufacturer's own diagnostic software to access every module in the vehicle at full depth. It reads manufacturer-specific codes, accesses proprietary live data, runs actuator tests, and can perform guided troubleshooting. On a modern BMW, for example, there are 60+ networked modules — OBD-II only sees a fraction of them.
Do you provide a written report I can share with my mechanic?
Yes. Every diagnostic includes a written report listing all fault codes found, which modules were scanned, our interpretation of the codes, and recommended repairs. You can share this with your mechanic, insurance company, or use it to get repair quotes. For pre/post collision scans, the report is formatted for insurance compliance.
Which Massachusetts cities do you serve?
We serve 15 cities across Massachusetts — Boston, Newton, Brookline, Cambridge, Wellesley, Weston, Lexington, Needham, Natick, Waltham, Framingham, Worcester, Quincy, Lowell and Springfield. We offer in-shop diagnostics at our location and can accommodate most vehicles same day.
